School Year Book 2011 Principals Statement

 2011 Community Year Book Report

 Mission statement:

Western Heights School aims for excellence in all learning and teaching. We foster a desire to learn within a stimulation and caring environment.”

We continue to maintain the intension of our Mission Statement and as ERO , Education Review Office ,said in this year’s report children are making good progress in their learning and classrooms are busy and active.

They said students are articulate and trusting and feel they are respected as learners .They exhibit a sense of wellbeing and are quick to offer support to others when needed.

Students are keen to contribute and engage in learning activities. They enjoy positive relationships with their teachers and support each other through the understanding of the Western Heights Way which embodies the schools social values and expectations.

ERO was very complimentary about the support the community gives to the school and that parents remain confident the school continues to offer positive and nurturing learning experiences to their children.

The theme of this year was ‘Auckland 2011’and the Year book provides an excellent record of all the activities we enjoyed during 2011. The Rugby World Cup  and Auckland The Super City were the motivating factors  for the planning .

The junior school musical was a highlight for the year with family and friends enjoying an outstanding production written and directed by Mrs Grindle with the huge support of the staff and amazing performances from our students and several teachers.

We are great advocates and participants of Jump Jam and were so excited to qualify for the entering of two teams at the National Jump Jam Competitions

The year 4-6 team were 5th overall in their category and our year1-4 received FIRST place for the North Island and second overall for New Zealand.

National Standards: The introduction of the National Standards  in New Zealand schools provided us with an opportunity to review our reporting to parents and update the student management system. The open evening in February was well attended and the two reporting progress and achievement sessions were also well attended. Having the children take part in these meetings has a positive effect on their learning as they are the critical factor in the partnership. Parents appreciated the guidance given to support the children in their ‘next steps’.

My thanks to all those families who have supported and encouraged our staff in their endeavour to provide teaching experiences that stimulate, motivate and engage the children for success in their learning.

Your commitment to our students and staff and your trust and encouragement   in Western Heights is appreciated as this is the key to being a high performing school.

To the graduating class of 2011, I wish you all well and know you go off to intermediate as young people who will develop into confident, connected ,actively involved lifelong learners.
