Dear Parents/Caregivers

Welcome to our many new families and welcome to Term 2. We hope you had an enjoyable break with your child.

We have a busy 11 week term ahead with plenty of exciting learning experiences planned for the children.

Term Two Inquiry: "Quest"-We will be undertaking an inquiry topic based around the theme of a quest. During this time we will be investigating why so many people are travelling to New Zealand over the coming weeks and the places they will visit while here. We will have a trip to the Airport in early June. Details of this will follow in a letter which will come home week 2. The cost of this trip will be $10.

Mathematics - Number knowledge and strategy. Geometry - 2D  shapes and their attributes.   Measurement-Time.  Year 1 basic facts focus this term is combinations that make 10. Children will be using shapes as a tool to help them memorise the facts.  A chart to help them learn at home is attached. Keep revising the doubles addition facts they learnt last term too!

Physical Education and Fitness -We will continue to have Jump Jam each morning as part of our fitness regime. You are welcome to attend Jump Jam in the mornings and participate to your level of comfort. We appreciate it when adults attending make an effort to role model by joining in.

During the term we will be covering both skipping and dance. P.E. sessions are Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

Junior School Show - you will have an opportunity to view our Junior dances in shows held on Thursday 30th June. Tickets will be $2. There will be a morning and evening show. Ticket sales will be limited for the evening show. Children will require simple costumes. Further details will follow.

100 Day party- In 2011 this falls on Thursday 7th July. It will be a day of celebration where children bring along a collection of 100 items to count on the day, a shared lunch and a disco in the afternoon. Start thinking about the item you will bring to count: paperclips, leaves, stones, pasta pieces, toothpicks etc. It is preferable if children bring a bag of roughly 110 small items so they can count out 100 in different ways on the morning. (This allows for lost pieces!)

Dates to note:

  • Wednesday 1 June: Airport trip Rooms 2,4,5 & 6
  • Tuesday 7 June: Airport trip Room 3
  • Week 7 (date to be confirmed) Jump Rope for Heart day.
  • Thursday 30 June: Junior School Shows (morning and evening)
  • Thursday 7 July: 100 day party
  • Friday 15 July End of Term 2

General Housekeeping:

  • Instructional reading continues as before. Your child needs to bring their reading book bag to school every day. Please return books every day, as the readers need to be circulated throughout the Junior classes.
  • Alphabet and Poem books are an important part of the Literacy programme. Please make sure these books are brought back to school every Monday.
  • Clothing and footwear - please label all items of clothing: skirts, socks, sweatshirts... Please keep a named spare set of clothing in your child's bag for winter accidents.
  • School opens at 8.30, for the children. Before school care is available. Please make appropriate arrangements if your child needs to be at school before 8.30. It is appreciated if children can arrive at school between 8.30 and 8.45 to give them time to settle into the classroom. The school day begins at 8.55.
  • If your child shows signs of illness, e.g. coughing, fever, runny nose, spots...PLEASE keep them at home until they have recovered.

Kind regards

Adele Nummy (Senior Teacher), Nichola Hogan, Jenna Aalbers, Jessie Eyre, Smita D'Lima, Tanya Boyd.
