Week 5, Term 3, 2010

Kia ora parents, caregivers and friends of the school,

Art Intensive was a very successful event for our students last week.  With help from parents, visiting artists and friends of the school every student produced quality art.  A big thank you to parent helpers, many who stayed all week.

Tomorrow, Friday 20 August, the school will be open to the community from 2.30 - 7p.m. when you can view the exhibition.  School will still finish at 3p.m.  The school hall and school foyer will house works from local artists for purchase.  The art done by the children will be around the school.  There will be refreshments and other products for sale.  Take this time to walk through the school to note the building upgrade and changes.  The profit gained from all sales will help cover the costs of the art week expenses.

Cultural Concert

Over 300 members of our school community attended the fantastic concert here at school on Friday 6 August.  The items performed were of a high quality and a huge thank you must go to not only the teachers, but the parents who also helped with the cultural displays.

The feedback from a number of parents was very positive and even my mother, who has attended school concerts in the area over the last 60 years, was still talking about it three days later.

Junior School Folk Dancing

Folk dancing evening is to be held on the morning and evening of Wednesday  1 September at 9.30a.m. and 6.30p.m.  Tickets are $2.00 and available from your junior child’s teacher.

Our Vege Patch & McCains

This area of the school is very popular with students and they often share some of their produce with me.  ‘McCains, You have done it again’, are running a promotion to support schools and their vegetable gardens.  Any barcodes from the McCains packets can be sent to the Principal’s office.

Car Park Safety

A number of parents are still worried about the car park madness at the beginning and end of the school day.  Please be patient at these times as we do fear there is going to be a serious accident.  If your children are older, do feel you can come and collect them at 3.10p.m. when the area is less busy.

There is a no right hand turn sign at the top of the car park to make the area safe as the traffic queues up at the crossing.  Can I please encourage you to show some consideration at these busy peak times at school?

Car Park Volunteers
If you would be willing to volunteer to monitor parents parking in the drop off zone between 8.15 - 9a.m. or 2.30 - 3.10p.m., email jo-anny@westernheights.school.nz or see Jo-Ann Yukich at the office.

Western Heights Netball

On Sunday 1 August, Western Heights Pumas competed at the Netball Manurewa tournament. This was the team’s first tournament and they represented the school with pride.  We had many comments about our uniforms, the girls and the exceptional quality of the umpiring.Despite the weather, the girls had a great day and gained valuable netball experience.  We played 5 games, winning 2 and losing 3 but managing to come third in our Yr5/6 grade due to gaining points for being within 5 goals in two games.  Thanks to our wonderful parents and supporters; Mackenzie James, our umpire for giving up her Sunday and to the team – a great bunch of girls!!
