Week 9, Term 2 2009

Kia ora parents, caregivers and friends of the school,

Building Update

The main administration area is now almost closed in and looking so good and befitting your community.  The school has been ‘undercode’ for many years and hopefully the new building will put us in the 21st century with some future proofing as I can’t see another project like this being done for the next 20 years.

To save money, we have a central garden area so that all drainage and a manhole is exposed, which meant a good deal of capping of drains was not required.  The end result will be something that reflects the Waitakere bush green image, ‘economy that produces some style’.

We have had times when we have been without some services such as power and water, but we have always put the children’s health and safety first.  All classrooms have hand sanitizer and all toilet areas have soap. We are very lucky here at school that we do not have contract cleaners who just come in at the end of day.  We have two staff on site all day to keep the toilet areas and school generally clean.  At this time of the year it can be challenging but they do an amazing job. Door handles and other high contact areas are wiped daily.

Not having a son, I am not sure about how we teach the wee boys to use the toilets correctly.  Maybe you could give us some help with this when they are at home.

Conference

Mrs Pat Hutton and I have been very fortunate to be attending a conference in Kuala Lumpur this week.  It is part of a contract that we have in partnership with St Dominic’s and Holy Cross. The school will be managed by Jo-Ann Yukich and other senior staff while we are away.  One of the factors that contributes to the success of Western Heights is that we do relate and see our school in an international setting.
