Kia ora parents, caregivers and friends of the school,
WHAT IS BEHIND THE BLUE COVER?
On Friday, at 10a.m., all will be revealed as we have the blessing of our Twin Streams Mural. This mural was done in conjunction with the Twin Streams project last year. The senior school having been planting and caring for a special area along the Opanuku Stream for the past three years.Students from St Dominics College worked with our pupils to produce a wonderful piece of art while learning about the importance of keeping our streams ‘healthy’. A formal gathering will be held on Friday to unveil and bless the art work . Congratulations to CS15 for their new garden and thank you to Mr Yukich for the help he has given to Mrs Yukich with other planting around the school.
As president of the Waitakere Area Principals Association, I have been working alongside the Improving School Attendance group. We have several initiatives that help improve students’ attendance and attitude to school. From last week all new five year old students receive a magnet frame for the fridge in which to put a school photo taken in the first week. Mrs Nummy takes the picture and the students have loved the gift.
We do not have a ‘truancy issue’ here at Western Heights but we do have a small group of children who are quite often late for school. Being a Mum, I can still remember the busy mornings when I had to get the girls to school on time. I had them organizing their school requirements and clothing for the next day before they went to bed. This did help the morning rush. Students who are late miss a lot of instructions and information about what is happening, not to mention important learning situations. It can be like being late for a movie and not being able to understand what is going on or what is happening because you don’t know who the characters are and what the plot is about. Students feel unsettled, disorganized and sometimes unhappy for the rest of the day. It can take a while for them to settle. We do like to help if you are unable to get to school, so just call us and we maybe able to support you.
