Week 7, Term 2, 2009

Kia ora parents, caregivers and friends of the school,

The school is in a constant state of change just now and we are having to be quite flexible to accommodate the buildingprogramme. The main office and reception is now by my office, so enter by the door next to the old Pod B toilets by the boiler shed. The sick bay is in the hallway outside my door during class hours and in the staffroom during  breaks.  It is more like ‘MASH’ than ‘Starship’ just now with very temporary beds, etc.  We encourage you collect your children as soon as possible from the sick bay if called, as the situation is not as comfortable as usual for them.

Pod B

As the grounds are so muddy and the upgraded rooms have smart new carpet, we are asking children to remove their shoes when in their class space.  This has been a lesson to them about looking after their belongings and keeping warm and dry.  Children do spend a percentage of the day sitting on the carpet so keeping dry and clean is best.Since the rain this week shoes are being taken in side and we are encouraging slippers at school.

Health Message – Influenza A ( Swine Flu)Pandemic Plan for Western Heights

The Ministry of Health advises that schools in particular are susceptible to many viruses and influenza.  Some basic health measures will slow down the spread of such viruses such as covering your mouth when coughing and sneezing, washing and drying hands thoroughly and remaining at home until cold and flu symptoms are gone.  Teachers are reminding children of these health recommendations. If you travel with your family to areas where they could be exposed to the Swine Flu it is suggested that the children stay home to ensure that they are free of Influenza A before returning to school. In the event that school maybe closed by the local health Authority, please check our school website for on line school leaning suggestions and other information.  Teachers will set up web pages for their classes to visit.www.westernheights.school.nz

A Message from the National Bank

Children and money – developing good savings habits
How often children save is more important than how much the save.  Remember, no deposit is too small.  It’s much better for
children to deposit something every week than to wait until they’ve got a big amount to put in the bank.  Get children into the habit of regular saving by making it a normal part of their week.  Helping them develop a regular saving habit will give them a great foundation as they go through life.  We look forward to seeing you all at school banking on Wednesday mornings in the school hall from 8.30a.m.
