Week 5, Term 1 2009

Kia ora parents, caregivers and friends of the school,

The senior schools big day out at Cornwallis was not hot and sunny, but really a lovely day. I hadn’t been to Cornwallis for many years and was impressed by the well managed, safe and tidy environment. Everyone had a good time and a huge thanks goes to all the parents and other family members who were able to come. As again, the children’s behaviour was exemplary everyone had a relaxed time. Special thanks to those who were prepared to get in the water so that the children could swim.

Attendance

Regular attendance at school is fundamental to student learning.  Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve education success and increase their career and life options.  Everybody benefits from regular student attendance, as this leads to greater student safety and community well-being. If you children are away from school for any reason, please phone the office, 836 1213 or email admin@westernheights.school.nz

As a school we have a very good record of attendance. School does begin at 8.55a.m. and the teachers love to have all their class members in class at the beginning of the school day. Children arriving late do sometimes feel disconnected with the programme and their friends. This can affect their learning.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

These were well attended last Thursday and teachers said they appreciated the helpful discussions they had with all parents and caregivers. If you were unable to come and would still like to see your child’s teacher, do call and make a time. As you can see by this newsletter, we very much focus on learning here at school and such things as good home/school partnerships and attendance are vital to ensure that we are successful.
