Western heights top

Week 1, Term 4 2009

Kia ora parents, caregivers and friends of Western Heights Primary and a special welcome to the new students and families who have joined the school already this term.

What a tragic way to start the term in Waitakere City with the death of wee Aisling Symes and our love and condolences go out to her parents and family.

The fourth term has some very exciting learning opportunities for our pupils, with the senior school off to camp in week four and the middle school have sleep-overs at Arataki over several weeks.  Parent information meetings are being held for these events.

The Indian dance groups and Kapahaka group are performing at Corbans Art Centre at 9.30a.m. on Friday 13 November.  They are then off to entertain the Te Atatu South Probus group. The Junior school topic is the Living Landscape and Precious Energy.  They are having a Wacky Hair Day on Tuesday 3 November and they will be included in the school sports day.

Details of these events will be in future newsletters.

The Western Heights 2009 Concert

Mr Noakes and Mrs Noakes have a concert involving their classes and the music group on Friday 6 November at 7p.m.  A varied evening programme of plays, music and dance.  This will be advertised more comprehensively by flyer within the next two weeks.

World Teachers Day—Friday 30 October

This is a day when we celebrate teaching and learning here at school.  All teachers and pupils will join in a synchronized “Hands Up” at 12.30p.m. to show their love of learning.  The Board of Trustees will take this opportunity to thank the staff by providing morning tea.

Kids Day Out

The Students’ Association at UNITEC are hosting a free family day on Saturday 24 October from 11a.m. to 3p.m. at the Henderson Primary School fields.  Featured there will be The Funky Monkeys, Old MacDonald’s Farm, Bouncy Castle, Storytellers and lots more.  Flyers are available at the school office, but I am sure the Western Leader will have promos.

Fundraising

Order forms have gone out for these popular art calendars which will be here in time for Christmas.  They are $12.00 each.  The teachers plan a worthwhile art activity for these calendars and the results are always stunning.

School Donation

We have had a good number of our families pay the school ‘donation’ this year even though we are in a recession.  This money goes towards the operation of the school including the management of the information technology. If you saw the articles in the Herald over the holidays, there are a large group of schools in Auckland who raise over $1 million each year, and to maintain a good standard of education the ‘donations’ are critical to meet learning and teaching expectations.

We are still accepting unpaid donations and welcome the money.

Operation Spring Clean

Yesterday the senior school participated in Waitakere City’s “Operation Spring Clean”.  Classes walked around the neighbouring streets and filled a large number of rubbish bags.  The children noticed that there were a large number of cigarette butts in the drains and were concerned that when it rained these would wash down the storm water and release nicotine and other toxins into our seas.  The clean up was very successful and the children really enjoyed caring for our community.
