Kia ora parents, caregivers and friends of the school,
Welcome to all the new pupils and their families who have just joined the Western Heights Family this term. Newsletters come home every two weeks and can also be found on our website www.westernheights.school.nz
Every day brings its challenges and it is very much ‘go with the flow’. As you can see the building project is moving along with its din, dirt, disruptions and decisions daily. The students are coping really well with the lack of playing space and the teachers are being very flexible and positive. The end result is going to be worth all the trouble. The car parking space is reduced as the builders are now unable to park on the grass, as they were, due to the wet weather. I appreciate the patience shown by the school community during this time.
Swine Flu
Directives have come from the Education Ministry very promptly re the Swine flu. We do have a pandemic plan but we also rely on the local health authority to give us guidance. The staff always stress to the children to take care when washing their hands before eating and after going to the bathroom. All people on site are encouraged to cover their mouths when coughing. There are some virulent strains of flu every winter and we do appreciate you keeping children home if they are sick.

Sausage Sizzle
Special thanks to Diane Sawyer who has been organising the sausage sizzle. Unfortunately, she is unable to continue this in term three and we are looking for someone to take over. We also require more parents to do the cooking. Volunteers would only have to do this once a term if we get enough people. Helpers are only required for approximately two hours on a Friday from 11a.m. Please call the office if you can help.
Netball
Good luck for your first round of games which begin this Saturday 2 May. Please check the website for game times (netballwaitakere.co.nz) or check with your team manager. As we have had some withdrawals due to illness or injury, we still have space in teams at all levels of the school, so see Mrs Nummy if you are interested in joining a team. All code of conduct signed slips should be returned to Mrs Nummy by this Friday.

Children and money – the importance of goals
National Bank School Banking is on Wednesdays in the School Hall from 8.30 to 8.55. Saving can be hard if you don’t have anything to save for. Having a goal is important, even for small children. Encourage children to think about what they want and how much they need to get it – whether it’s a toy, new clothes, or whatever is important to them. That gives them something concrete to aim for. It also helps children understand the trade-off between spending money now or saving it for something more important
Music for Young Children (MYC)
MYC is a high quality, international music education programme providing group lessons (3-5 children) for two to ten year olds teaching piano, singing, rhythm, theory and ear-training.
