Auckland Art Gallery Trips
Term 1
All of our classes have been on their Auckand Art Gallery Trip! The children had a range of exciting experiences such as, walking through Albert Park and learning about the statues and monuments, creating their own mono-print using a screen printing board, sugar paper and our fingers and admiring the amazing paintings displayed in the gallery.
They looked very carefully at a portrait painted by Goldie and discussed what they liked and disliked about the painting. They also looked at the lighting, use of colour and the people’s clothing. When they were looking at the portrait of Betty Cumow painted by Rita Angus in 1942, they participated in a bit of drama using the “Hot seat” activity where they pretended they were the lady in the painting.
The classes got to ask us some questions. When they looked Tony Fomison’s self portrait, painted in 1977, they discussed the setting (window frame) and the medium he used. We all thought these paintings were amazing!
When they did their mono-prints, they used screen printing boards and lightly covered it with sugar paper. Then used a pencil or our fingers (only very gently) to paint a picture of ourselves. Everyone had a ball doing this!
In Albert Park they all looked at monuments such as the Gateway and the Throwback. They also had fun trying to measure the circumference of an old tree by holding hands. Later we got to play on the canons where we pretended we were in a war and got to “man” the canons!
