#9 - Week 5, Term 2, 2008

Kia ora Parents, Caregivers and Friends of the school,

Winter is here and children are now playing their winter sports.  The autumn annual cross country was run at Oratia, as it has been for about 18 years, and we again had some successful athletes gain good placings.

George Jordan won his age group which is a fantastic effort.  We had three major placings in the 10/11 year old girls with Monique Barnes coming third followed by Leah Goodburn fourth and Jessica Taylor, fifth.

Alex Wilson was placed fourth in the 8 year old girls.  These races have a huge number of children running in each, as there are representatives from all the Henderson primary schools.

Achievement

Athletics:  Jordan Shaw was thrilled to share her athletic achievement with me last week showing me her two trophies. She belongs to the athletic club and runs at the Trust Stadium every Tuesday.  One trophy was for being a promising athlete and the other for club championship points for the Grade nine girls.  Keep it up Jordan.

The Challege for the Winter Term

A major challenge for us during the winter with all the flu and other seasonal bugs that are around, is to fully staff the school.  Teachers are on the front line of these, being in a room all day with a large group of children. We endeavour to get a substitute teacher most times but at other times we have to be fairly creative.  I know you will show patience and understanding during the next two terms.

Parent Teacher Interviews

School will finish at 12.30p.m. on Wednesday 25 June for parent teacher interviews.  Appointment forms have gone out.  If you have not received one, please contact the office.  Please put all children in the family on the same sheet as this makes it easier to appoint times.  Confirmation of times will be sent home on Thursday 19 June.  After school care is available from 12.30p.m., so call Liz on 836 0553 or 027 603 5046 if you need to use her service.

Teacher Only Day

The TOD workshop on the new New Zealand curriculum was worthwhile.  The new document is very ‘slim’ but empowers schools to take up the challenge in adapting it to suit the community.  The curriculum places learners in the centre of the learning process.  It emphasizes the importance of literacy and numeracy and of a broad education across a range of learning areas.  It describes the key competencies students need in order to live, learn, work and contribute as active members of our communities and emphasises the importance of students being able to apply their knowledge and relate to unfamiliar material.  www.minedu.govt.nz

La Disco du Cirque

The whole school has been invited to a FREE performance of this circus being promoted by Dean Lonegan Events.  The cost to each child is $3 for the bus.  We will be leaving school for the Trust Stadium at about 10a.m. on Tuesday 24 June as the show starts at 11a.m.  All money needs to be given to the class teacher.
