Western heights top

#3 - Week 5, Term 1, 2008

Kia ora Parents, Caregivers and Friends of the school,

Schools have traditions and one of the Western Heights traditions is the ‘School Picnic’.  When Western Heights was a small country school all the children and their families attended but in recent times only the middle and junior school are involved.  It is an enjoyable family day out at Long Bay where teachers, parents and children get to know each other in a different setting.  I look forward to spending the day with this large group at Long Bay tomorrow.

The senior school went out to Piha on their Beach Education programme and most senior classes go on a ‘Big Day Out’ at the end of the year.

The Student Council was a tradition that was started upon my arrival at Western Heights.  The senior classes conducted elections last month where two representatives were selected for each room.  They have regular meetings where they discuss issues and arrange events.  The garden by the flag pole was a project done by the council last year and they are pleased to see seats have been added this month which was also on the plan.  Additions to the senior playground was a 2007 project and this is also being done very soon.

Congratulations must go to the 2008 representatives who are:

CS9 Cody Kirby and Caitlin Davidson

CS16 Aaron Larsen and Kajal Kumar

CS17 Shane Fuataga and Jessica Taylor

CS19 Ethan Birch and Shakerah Zakeri

CS20 Rewa Clark and Briana Sitiene

CS21 Dom Park and Briar Bodle

Parent Teacher Conferences

We had a high attendance at these appointments last Thursday and the teachers were thrilled to meet so many of their student’s parents and caregivers.  A good relationship built between home and the class teacher very early in the year leads to enhanced learning outcomes for the student. The families who were unable to attend the parent teacher appointments last week can still contact the school and make another time.
