#5 - April 5th, Week 9

Kia ora Parents, Caregivers and Friends of the schoolThe term has been short with eight full weeks and two short weeks. The activities and programmes covered have been many and varied.  The children have had a number of trips related to our history focus this year.  If you went to school in New Zealand you may remember the school journals that were used during the reading programme.  This publication has been in New Zealand schools for a hundred years and so we are celebrating and finding out about life 100 years ago.I enjoyed dressing up and going to the Arataki Bush camp with CS20 on Monday last week.  We spent the day living bush camp life as it would have been 1889 and the children loved the experience but were glad they did not live in that time. They got to use a pit saw plus cross cut saw, make scones and tea over a very smoky fire and build a canvas hut.The middle school spent a morning last week also in a different time zone as they dressed up and attended school as it would have been 100 years ago.  The teachers found the formal and somewhat negative teaching style quite stressful and everyone was glad to come back to 2007 at lunchtime.Thank you to those parents who helped with all of this term’s educational trips.

Dates to NoteMonday 23 April:  Term Two startsFriday 18 May:  Union Meeting.  The staff are attending a paid union meeting. School will be closed from 12.30.  The Board of trustees discussed this matter at their meeting last week.  They were unhappy about the number of children who stayed at school during the last meeting as supervision is an issue.  The majority of our teachers are union members who are required to attend, therefore your support would be helpful and appreciated.  The Principals Association is in dialogue with the union re: these meeting times.

Pool Key Holders:  Note:  pool is closed over the holidays

Board of TrusteesThe present board met for their final official meeting last Wednesday.  Some of the members have been board members for over 12 years and have made a huge contribution to the school during an exciting time, as the pupil numbers have grown from 270 to over 600.I would like to thank them for their commitment, supportiveness and attitude that has made my position as principal a very positive experience.  The school has moved forward as a result of the good partnership between the board and school staff.  Following are the results of the 2007 BOT election.  Only 215 voting papers were received back, out of 820 sent out to eligible voters.
