Kia ora Parents, Caregivers and Friends of the school,
Last week the junior school enjoyed their visit to the museum to see the dinosaur displays as part of their major current unit of work.
The senior school were challenged on Tuesday by ‘Maths World’ as they were involved in group problem solving using some very carefully designed ‘games’.
The teachers do go that ‘extra mile’ to plan interesting activities to support the children’s learning and as a result we have total engagement by the learners with pleasing results. The current maths ‘GLOSS’ testing done shows that Western Heights stand very well nationally in the numeracy strand. This area of the maths curriculum has been a major focus for us over the last three years and we are quite excited with the results. A huge effort has gone into the professional development of teachers and an increase of money has been spent on supporting maths resources. The survey also showed that nearly all of the children enjoy maths.
Private Property
Here is a letter that will be given to neighbours of the school this week.
Due to the ‘negative’ after school hours activities on the Western Heights school grounds, the Board of Trustees are getting gates installed at the back and side entrances. These will be locked when school is closed for the day, therefore restricting the access to the grounds from 4p.m. to 8a.m. each school day and all weekend. T
he board have been forced to do this as the damage and unsightly mess that has had to be dealt with, on a regular basis, has become very expensive not to mention disheartening to the school staff.
If you do see any unusual activities at the school during after school hours, please feel to ring the Henderson Police Station .
Pecks Bakery
The latest review of the neighbouring bakery’s rating came out as a ‘B’.
Cyber-safety
Several parents have voiced a concern over the use of the BEBO web site. This ‘age restricted’ (13) site is being used by some of the senior school and some issues have arisen. The children show a naivety about using the World Wide Web and do need to be told about not letting out personal details. We cannot get onto such sites as BEBO here at school as they are blocked, however when used at home in a responsible manner they can be fun and a good way to keep in contact with friends and family. Do take some time to look at such sites and endeavour to set up a safe cyber environment for your children.
Stranger Danger
We have reminded the children that they are not to accept any food from people they don’t know and I know that you will reinforce this.
Reminder: Dogs are NOT Permitted on School Grounds
