Western heights top

Week 3, Term 4 2007

Kia ora Parents, Caregivers and Friends of the school,

Our Korean visitors are enjoying their stay at Western Heights. They were overwhelmed by the welcome accorded them and had never seen any thing like the haka and Maori songs we performed.

While in Korea in August, I was amazed by a performance of a young Korean choir.  They sang  Po karikariana which was sung so beautifully that it made me quite emotional.  As a result of us seeing them, the Education Province is allowing them to come to New Zealand to perform in a number of schools in December.

The cultural exchange between our schools is proving very successful in promoting international understanding and goodwill.

Fundraising for Camp

The chocolate fundraiser for camp was almost completed in a week with some very keen students selling a number of boxes.  The Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) programmes for the senior school are quite costly and the budget for these is well calculated.  The children spend three days and two nights at Carey Park, have instructors for first aid + go to MERC for one day in November.

Looking back at the cost of buses over the last few years, I see that it has risen dramatically and now are in four figures for one return trip to Long Bay.  $1,200+.  Parents will still have to pay for the instruction at MERC but we will have covered the cost of transport.

I spent a day at the Marine Education Resource Centre last year and was so impressed by what the children are exposed to and the opportunities they are given.  It is so important for NZ children to take part in a water and outdoor education safety programme.

Board of Trustees report from Chairperson Trudi Brocas

Lead teachers in numeracy presented their report on numeracy development across the school at our recent meeting.  The board were very pleased with the standard of assessment and programming and note that most of our students are working at, or above, the expectations for their age.  We also acknowledge Jo-Ann Yukich, Helen Emson and Patricia Jerkovich who have been working on further developing maths assessments with Auckland University.  Our students are very well served by our schools representation at this level.

The board of trustees would also like to thank those parents who continue to be considerate and vigilant of children’s safety during the busy drop of and pick up times.  The carpark area can at times be very busy especially when it is raining and we feel it shows genuine community spirit when drivers are patient polite and considerate.
